Ground Broken for $1B Brown’s Town Health Centre

Health care in St Ann is set to receive a major boost as ground was officially broken for the construction of a state-of-the-art health centre in Brown’s Town, valued at $1 billion.

The new facility, part of the Government’s Health Systems Strengthening Programme (HSSP), will replace the current centre and deliver expanded primary care services, including diagnostics, lab work, pharmacy services, and electronic health record support.

Public Health Gets a Major Upgrade

At the June 30 groundbreaking ceremony, Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton hailed the project as “transformative”, crediting a multi-agency partnership involving the Inter-American Development Bank, the EU, and the Jamaican Government.

Thirteen health centres across Jamaica are set to be upgraded or built under the HSSP initiative. In Brown’s Town, temporary services have been relocated to Brown’s Town Community College until construction is completed.

Our Opinion

This project represents a bold and necessary step forward for healthcare equity in rural Jamaica. State-of-the-art facilities and digital health tools should be the standard — not the exception. We applaud this investment in community wellness.
